We continue to monitor the current investigation into the tragic fire at Lakanal House, Camberwell, London, which claimed the lives of 6 residents. We are particularly keen to understand how the refurbishment work, undertaken throughout the tower block, was conducted and inspected and if 3rd party accredited and certificated products were used.

Various press reports have focussed on a number of areas within this and its nearby sister tower block. Amongst the areas of investigation, we are following developments regarding the installation and maintenance of fire doors, and any refurbishment and fire protection relating to the timber stairs used in each flat.

BWF has clear guidance on the specification, installation and maintenance of fire doors and doorsets. We have also worked closely with CLG (The Department of Communities and Local Government) on the fire protection and testing of timber staircases. The report on this work is overdue and we are pressing CLG for its urgent publication.
