A major new collaboration between fire safety groups, fire door and ironmongery organisations and property associations is behind the inaugural ‘Fire Door Safety Week’ which runs from 16-21 September 2013.

New Collaborative Campaign spotlights Fire Door Safety

Fire Door Safety Week is all about raising awareness of this critical element of fire safety in every commercial, public and multiple occupancy building.

The brainchild of the BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme and supported by many industry partners, the campaign aims to raise awareness of the critical role of fire doors, drawing attention to specific issues such as poor installation and maintenance and encouraging building owners and users to check the operation and condition of their fire doors and to report those that aren’t satisfactory.

In the process, the campaign hopes to engage and educate people, helping the whole building industry and every property owner to understand the correct specification, supply, installation, operation, inspection and maintenance of fire doors.

A wide range of activities are already planned around the UK and online as part of the Week, including issuing new guidance on managing fire doors, including simple check lists a live broadcast of a fire resistance test at BM TRADA, training initiatives for merchants, contractors and building owners, a mass distribution of fire door safety information to 22,000 Westminster council home residents and a CPD workshop by the Fire Door Inspection Scheme for fire engineers.

Fire Door Safety Week organisers are setting up local radio interviews, writing to MPs and chief fire officers, and promoting the campaign extensively via PR and social media.

John Fletcher, manager of the BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme said:

“We are urging all building owners, fire safety campaigners and the door industry to get involved in this campaign, to pledge support and to use the added publicity during the week to get across their messages about fire doors and keeping people safe.”
