The inquest into the fire at Lakanal House, (Camberwell, London), finally began today.
Three women and three children died on 3 July 2009 when a fire was started by a faulty television on the ninth floor of the 14-storey Lakanal House in Camberwell. About 30 people were rescued and almost 100 people were left homeless.
At the time, several residents described the complicated layout of the smoke-filled tower block as “a maze” which made the evacuation difficult.
The London Fire Brigade is expected to tell the inquest that breaches of building regulations hindered rescue efforts as fires spread between flats and floors.
