During the course of September, in support of Fire Door Safety Week, the BWF Fire Door Alliance will be emphasising the need for building owners and the appointed ‘Responsible Person’ to check the performance of fire doors. To support a social media campaign, BWF Technical Director Kevin Underwood has written a blog that looks at the recommendations relating to fire doors made by Sir Martin Moore-Bick in conclusion to Phase 1 of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.
During Phase 1 of the Inquiry, Sir Martin found evidence that ineffective fire doors ‘allowed smoke and toxic gasses to spread through the building more quickly than should have been possible.’ He used this finding to underline the importance of effective fire doors and to justify the cost of upgrading older doors and doorsets to meet current standards.
