Landlords' hefty fines for breach of RRO

In two unrelated cases, landlords have received hefty fines for breaches of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order : 2005

In Peterborough, a pub landlord, who converted the upstairs into flats without applying for consent, was fined £3,350 and £899 costs. The landlord  also failed to fit fire doors and adequate smoke alarms. The breaches came to light following a serious blaze which occurred at the property last September.

In a separate case, the landlord of a block of flats in Scarborough was ordered to pay £5,500 in fines with £2,400 in costs for failing to take general fire precautions and undertaking an inadequate fire risk assessment.

When fire broke out in a ground floor flat in May 2010, residents on the upper floors were only made aware of the fire by passers-by shouting up at the windows.
